The Siemens SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breaker is now being crafted with biomass-balanced plastics, specifically Ultramid® BMBcertTM and Ultradur® BMBcertTM from BASF. This innovative move replaces fossil feedstock with biomethane from renewable sources like agricultural waste, maintaining the same quality and performance as conventional plastics.This collaboration is not just about creating a sustainable product; it's a testament to Siemens' commitment to their DEGREE framework, aiming for a 1.5°C science-based decarbonization target and a 90% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. This collaboration is a significant step towards driving circularity in plastics value chains and the automotive industry.The process involves chemically recycling tires into a liquefied state, which Neste then converts into a high-quality raw material for polymers and chemicals manufacturing. Borealis takes this raw material and processes it into base chemicals like phenol and acetone, which are then supplied to Covestro. Covestro uses these materials to create polycarbonates, which are essential for various automotive parts such as headlamps and radiator grilles.What's even more impressive is that the first products based on this collaboration are already available, showcasing the practical application of this sustainable initiative. The project also explores the potential of using polyurethanes for car interiors, further expanding the impact of this innovative approach.The partners are leveraging the mass balancing approach and ISCC Plus certification to ensure the share of recycled content is attributed correctly to the final products.
